The speculation surrounding the recent awards show has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team might be building a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it sparked the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of specialized paths you can achieve if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might progress the story because you heeded something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is precisely these elements that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
