EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “another example” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the new year, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, following concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
